Back in October when the Hubby and I were on our annual trip to Kauai, I started to notice something new in the grocery stores. Cold pressed juice made by Kauai Juice Co. It was about $5.99 a bottle and I was intrigued because it was beautiful but still nervous to just pick one. We went shopping a couple of days later at one of our usual spots and there was actually the store. I walked into this clean, modern juice bar (almost like a brewery but better). I chatted with the girl behind the counter to get a better understanding of the products, how they’re made, ingredients, and nutritional benefits. They had cold pressed juice, nut milks, and kombucha. She started to describe the benefits of juicing which reminded me that the Hubby had an upset stomach. She suggested a juice that had lemon, ginger, and turmeric. I thought for sure he wouldn’t like it but he did! And he felt better in 30 minutes. I ordered something more tropical – a mintacolada (coconut water, pineapple, and mint). Both were amazingly good! I actually spent a good amount of my ‘fun’ money back at the Kauai Juice Co. shop. Between the juice and the kombucha on tap, I’d say it was money well spent and I felt better too.
So after we got home, I suggested we buy a juicer. I did some research from several websites and friends and landed on the Hurom Slow juicer. It’s not something you buy impulsively. Since it’s a bit of an investment, the Hubby and I decided this would be our Christmas gift to each other. Luckily enough, they had a Black Friday special for 30% off. Sold!
Our beautiful juicer arrived yesterday. I stopped on my way home and picked up what I thought would be good things to juice (kale, cucumber, blueberries, pineapple, apple, carrot, etc etc) When I finally got home, I felt like I was 5 years old again on Christmas morning. I immediately set it up and starting juicing. I had already been prepping for this day that our juicer would arrive so I bought a few different juicing books. First, The Big Book of Juices. It has over 400 juice recipes! I also bought Kris Carr’s Crazy Sexy Juice. Also a good book.
My first juice was a green juice that had kale, apple, and lemon. The juicer is quiet and fascinating to watch. I didn’t know what to expect, it’s kinda hard to drink something so green and I was slightly concerned I wouldn’t like it. I poured each of us a glass and it was even better than I could have imagined. I almost felt like I was back in Kauai. Afterwards, I cleaned the juicer and surprisingly it was easy to clean. I told the Hubby I’d get up and try another new juice for him to drink before he left for work. Now I’ve always been afraid of carrot juice, I don’t know why but it just doesn’t sound appetizing to me. Well, it was amazing too! I used carrots, apples, and ginger. Finally, I just couldn’t wait so as soon as the Hubby left, I tried one more called a Bloody Pineapple. I feel like I could juice all day! I won’t say the ingredients because one of them the Hubby can’t stand and would be upset that I even brought this item into the house.
Here are some pics of my juices…aren’t they beautiful?!? I never thought food could be so beautiful and tasty. I guess I haven’t really paid much attention to what I’ve been putting in my body to that level but I’m definitely looking now.
Do you have any favorite juices? I’m on the hunt for recipes.
