Run DMC or Run DC

It’s Tricky.”  Run DMC seemed fitting for my theme this weekend. I travel for work a lot, I travel for volunteer work, and in between work and pleasure, I like to run.  So how do I fit in a good run?  It can be challenging and it can be tricky.  Sometimes I run in the morning, sometimes mid-day, and other times in the evening.  I have to be flexible to get in my workout and this past weekend was no different.

I was in Washington, D.C. for a conference representing the Young Survival Coalition as a YSC RISE Advocate.  Stay tuned for my next blog post which will discuss the details of the conference.  However, from the beginning, I knew I was going to get in a run- no matter what.

I would have loved to have gotten up early on Saturday and gone for a run but with the time difference, I knew I needed my sleep.  Maybe in the evening, maybe tomorrow I thought.  I knew I only wanted to get in 3 miles or 30 minutes, that was the goal which seemed doable.

After I spent a full day of meetings, I saw my opportunity.  I had this perfect window – after meetings, before dinner.  I checked in at the hotel to see if there was a safe path.  I would love to run the DC mall but my hotel really wasn’t that close.  To  be honest, it looked a little far for the time I had but decided to just get out there and see what happens.

Turns out there was an amazing path!   From the hotel it was about a mile and it took me past Reagan National, across the Potomac to the Washington Memorial…from there the White House was in my sites.  Even though I was at 4.5 miles away from my hotel it was a great, fast run. Perfect weather for running – 60 degrees and overcast. It felt good, so my 3 mile run quickly turned into a 9 mile run.  I took a few snapshots of the history and the beauty of my run along the way.

One of my favorite things about traveling is the things I get to see when I lace up my running shoes and just go for a run. The fresh air, the scenery can be a great break from the busy work.   Unfortunately, I didn’t get to go out again.  Although I did put in 6 miles on Tuesday walking around Capitol Hill – meetings at the House, meetings at the Senate.  If only it would have been appropriate to wear my running shoes.
