20th Anniversary…

As most of you know, I’m not really a fan of this whole getting older idea. I feel like I’m on the verge of this mid-life crisis…and if the hubby wouldn’t object, I’d totally buy myself a convertible Porsche.   I’m sure most people aren’t super excited to get older – after a certain age nothing really exciting happens.  I mean it’s not like turning 21 and having that freedom and power to go buy a six pack at the 7-11.  I feel like now my excitement is getting a membership to AARP (which somehow I’ve already been getting propaganda on)  However, staying young forever just isn’t realistic – I get it but I don’t want to get it.  So in my efforts to stay positive and accept my age, I’m trying a new approach…

TODAY (I say enthusiastically) is my 20th anniversary of my 21st  birthday.  Now you could say I’m not accepting the age thing but…I’m choosing to look at all the positive things I’ve done since during 21.  Here’s a good start (in no particular order)

  1. Moved from Memphis to Page, AZ back to Memphis
  2. Finished grad school
  3. Moved from Memphis to Flagstaff
  4. Got my first real job (with benefits!)
  5. Moved from Flagstaff to Phoenix
  6. Bought my first house
  7. Moved from Phoenix to Olympia, WA
  8. Got married
  9. Bought house on 5 acres with hubby
  10. Ran 7 marathons & 20-something half marathons
  11. Completed 2- 100 mile bike rides
  12. Had 6 jobs
  13. Survived cancer
  14. Moved to Seattle part time
  15. Got involved in the community (volunteer for various cancer orgs)
  16. Started a blog
  17. Traveled to Hawaii (12 times?), Mexico (3 times), Germany (2 times), Paris (once), and various cities in the US
  18. Started my health coach certification
  19. Made a ton of friends along the way
  20. Adopted 2 dogs and 2 cats

So you see, the last 20 years…I’ve been busy living life to the fullest.  And that’s what I’m celebrating today…not the number, not the age but what I’ve accomplished so far. I’m feeling pretty good about that as well as what the future holds.

My gift to myself was a run around the lake after work.  Spring has definitely sprung here in Seattle and I realized my birthday wish had come true…the sun came out, the temps warmed up and it was a perfect day to be outside.  It was a beautiful day.   I won’t say it was the best run I’ve done but it felt good nonetheless.  For a grand finale, I treated myself to a giant hill.  I thought this is what 41 is…making it to the top and feeling great!

Thanks to everyone who sent birthday wishes!  Makes me happy to know I’m surrounded by so many great people.
