I woke up this morning to the sound of the rain pounding on the roof. As I lay in bed trying to figure out if I wanted to get out or not, I immediately remembered it was November and then my second thought was the song by Guns n Roses – November Rain. Seemed like a fitting theme song for the day.
When this song came out, it was the summer before my senior year in high school and my friends and I watched this video on MTV over and over and over again. Mind you this was still when MTV actually played music videos.
So once I was up and had a cup of my coffee, I decided to search for the video and watch it again. I’d forgotten how long it was (8:57). The whole gist of the video is a love story, loving and leaving, and basically nothing lasts forever. The video brought back some great memories….like the one where Stephanie Seymour walks down the aisle in the wedding gown. At 17, I knew my wedding gown was gonna be just like hers and the kiss, that’s how my husband I would kiss. Ok, so my wedding didn’t exactly happen like that but it’s probably a good thing. The video didn’t really end well.
So as with most of my posts, I gonna use the ‘In the cold November Rain’ analogy to my running. I figure it’s more fitting to compare my running to a video like this rather than my actual marriage.
Here it is, November 1 and I have half marathon in 40 days. It will be my last one in the Tacoma series – Santa Runs Tacoma. So far 2 out of the 3 races I’ve run in Tacoma this year, I’ve had a PR and I’m hoping to turn it into 3 out of 4. Although, if I’m gonna try to beat my 1:59 record, I’m gonna need to start training. Better late than never, right?
Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like I haven’t been running. It’s just I haven’t been running consistently or of any real distance. The furthest I ran in October was 4 miles, not total just in one session. I ran plenty of 3-4 mile routes but now…now in the cold November rain, I need to pick up the pace and the distance.
So after I spent time reminiscing about Guns n Roses and my past, I looked at the weather and hoped that there was going to be a break in showers today. It’s basically been raining off and on all day with sprinkles to heavy down pour and wind. Late in the afternoon, I finally got up the nerve that if I’m going to run, I just need to be brave and embrace the weather. I ran 3 miles. My first mile was a great 8:30 pace! Second mile, a little slower and the final mile was not quite as slow. Average pace was 9:17. Not bad but I can improve. I’ve planned out the next 40 days of running/training so I’ll keep you posted on my progress.
As for the song, I love the line…
“Cause nothin last forever, not even the cold November Rain.”
Right, thanks Axl for that line but after the cold November rain, comes the even colder December rain.
