At My Starting Line…

Well today is the first day of the new year, a new startling line.  And I already know it’s going to be a great one (year & hopefully lots of starting lines)!  Why, well I have a new project and it started today.  I’m calling it “40 & Fucking Fabulous!”  Why 40 & Fucking Fabulous??  Well, I’m turning 40 this year (you might have guessed that part) and I’ve been dreading it for the last 6 months.  So I’m working on changing my attitude and trying to get excited about moving into the next decade, next age bracket, next age group or like a friend of mine is teasing me ‘middle age.’  2015 will also mark my 5 year survivor-versary from breast cancer – a huge milestone to survivors.  So my plan is to turn 40 and feel fabulous!

Like most people who are waking up this morning, I’ve decided to get on the ‘get fit’, ‘get in shape’, ‘eat right’, etc bandwagon.  I think I ate and drank my way through 2014 and it did nothing for me.  Therefore, I need to reclaim my body and feel good about it.  I started my morning by getting on the scale and like most people, I didn’t like what I saw.  Sure, I’ve been running and some of that could be muscle but let’s  be honest…it’s not all muscle.  As it turns out the beer/wine diet really doesn’t work or at least it doesn’t work like it did when I was in my 20’s.  I’ll admit for the last 4 months, I’ve been really scared of the scale and I’ve dreaded to see what it said. But this morning I decided if I’m going to be fabulous, I have to be brave to step on the scale.  I know it’s not about the number but I haven’t been feeling so hot either.  So I’m motivated to change.

I’ve been thinking about this project for a while and trying to find motivation.  So when my family decided to not get each other gifts but give ourselves a gift I thought this would help me move in the right direction.  We wrapped our gifts, put them under the tree and opened them in front of everyone.  In some ways this was a great idea…no one has to return that unwanted gift or act like you like the gift because guess what – you picked it out all by yourself!  So what did I buy myself??  A training journal (Believe Training Journal written by Lauren Fleshman) and a race (Seattle Hot Chocolate 15k on March 1).  I was excited about both gifts that I could hardly go to sleep Christmas Eve – not really because I probably would have bought this anyway, this was the down side to buying your own Christmas gift.  Today though,  I’m excited to sit down and plan out the first phase of my project.

I’ll be working on the details over the next few days but as of today I have 88 days to look and feel my best.

Day 1: lifted weights (chest, biceps, and back), ran 3.25 miles

Have you ever had a goal or project to look and feel better?  Did it work?

To my runner friends, what races do you have planned for 2015?  I would love some ideas!

  1. You blogged! Can it also be Fifty and Fabulous! I’m not looking forward to the big 50, but I think of all I can do and I’m very proud that I ran a sub-4:30 marathon at 49.8.
I just registered for the Hot Chocolate 15K and the Eugene Marathon. Let me know what else you have planned.
    Happy New Year!
